The sculpture ‘JMB 2023’ is a tribute to the artist’s life.
It originated on the terrace of the Centre Pompidou in Paris where Krabbé had seen an exhibition of Jean Michel Basquiat who passed away in 1988.
After Krabbé visited the exhibition of Basquiat he saw a sculpture of a lion with wings perched on on of the corners of the Gothic Tour Saint-Jacques that dates back to the early 15th century.
The winged lion made a strong impression and it seemed to the artist it was the perfect symbol for the way of an artist. King of the animal kingdom an then even winged...
It could be the perfect stand in to resemble the work of the artist, thet in order to create, needs supernatural powers and is always going against the prevailing taste and takes on head winds often in criticism.
